How this calculator works

Carpet is commonly quoted in square feet or square yards. Measure the usable floor area first, then allow extra for trimming, doorway cuts and fitting. For broadloom carpet, roll width and seam placement can matter as much as raw area.

Worked example

A 12 \u00d7 15 ft room is 180 sq ft. With 10% waste, plan for about 198 sq ft, or 22 square yards.

How much extra carpet should I allow for waste?

Around 5–10% is common for simple rooms, but patterned carpet, awkward shapes and seam matching can require more.

Why does carpet sometimes need more than the room square footage?

Broadloom carpet comes in fixed roll widths. The cutting layout can create offcuts, and pattern matching can increase the required length.

How do I convert square feet of carpet to square yards?

Divide square feet by 9. For example, 180 sq ft is 20 square yards.

Should closets be included in a carpet estimate?

Yes, if they will be carpeted. Measure them as separate sections and add them to the main room area.
