How this calculator works
For a simple symmetrical gable or shed roof, pitch increases the sloped surface area above the flat building footprint. The result is then converted to roofing squares, where one square equals 100 sq ft.
FormulaRoof area ≈ footprint × √(1 + (rise ÷ 12)²)
Worked example
A 30 × 40 ft footprint is 1,200 sq ft. A 6:12 pitch multiplies that footprint by about 1.118 before waste.
Useful answers
Roof Square Footage Calculator FAQs
What is a roofing square?
One roofing square equals 100 square feet of roof surface area.
How does roof pitch affect square footage?
A steeper roof has more sloped surface than the same flat footprint, so the pitch multiplier increases the estimated area.
Does this work for hip roofs?
It can provide a rough estimate from footprint and pitch, but complex hips, valleys, dormers and mixed pitches are better measured as separate roof planes.
How much roofing waste should I add?
Ten percent is a common starting point for simple roofs, while complex layouts can require more. Supplier or roofer guidance should take precedence.
